Everything you need to apply for a UK Student Visa in 2026 โ€” documents checklist, financial requirements, biometrics, and common rejection reasons explained.

UK Student Visa Requirements 2026: Everything You Need to Know

Applying for a UK Student Visa in 2026 requires careful preparation. The Home Office assesses every application against a strict set of requirements, and a single missing document or insufficient bank balance can result in refusal. This checklist covers every requirement so you can apply with confidence.

1. Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS Number)

Before you can apply for your Student Visa, your UK university must issue you a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). This is a unique 14-character reference number โ€” not a physical letter โ€” that your university registers with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) on your behalf.

Your CAS number contains critical information: your course name, start and end dates, tuition fees, and your university's UKVI Sponsor Licence number. You cannot submit your visa application without it. Universities typically issue CAS numbers 6โ€“12 weeks before your course start date.

2. Financial Requirements

You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover both your living costs and your tuition fees. UKVI requires the following maintenance funds to be held in your bank account for at least 28 consecutive days before your visa application date:

  • Universities in London: ยฃ1,334 per month ร— 9 months = ยฃ12,006
  • Universities outside London: ยฃ1,023 per month ร— 9 months = ยฃ9,207
  • Plus: Your first-year tuition fees (if not already paid to the university)

The funds must be in your account โ€” or a parent or legal guardian's account โ€” for 28 consecutive days without falling below the required amount. Official bank statements in English (or translated by a certified translator) are required.

3. English Language Requirement

You must demonstrate proficiency in English either through:

  • IELTS Academic: Minimum 5.5โ€“6.5 overall (depending on university and course level)
  • PTE Academic: Equivalent scores accepted at most universities
  • TOEFL iBT: Accepted by many institutions
  • Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter: Accepted at many mid-tier universities if your previous education was conducted in English

Your university sets the specific English requirement for your course. Russell Group universities typically require IELTS 6.5 or higher. Many other universities accept MOI letters from English-medium institutions.

4. ATAS Certificate (Academic Technology Approval Scheme)

If you are studying certain subjects at postgraduate level that are considered sensitive โ€” including advanced physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, and materials science โ€” you may require an ATAS certificate from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

ATAS approval is required before your visa application and takes approximately 20 working days to process. You should apply for ATAS as soon as you receive your university offer and before your CAS is issued. Not all students need ATAS โ€” your university will advise whether your course requires it.

5. Biometrics

All Student Visa applicants must attend a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in their home country to provide biometric data โ€” fingerprints and a digital photograph. The biometric enrolment fee is ยฃ19.20. Book your appointment as soon as you submit your online visa application, as appointment slots can be limited in peak season (Julyโ€“August).

6. Standard Processing Time

The standard processing time for a UK Student Visa applied for outside the UK is approximately 15 working days (3 weeks) from your biometrics appointment. A Priority Service (additional ยฃ500) reduces this to 5 working days where available. A Super Priority Service provides next-working-day decisions in select countries.

Apply no earlier than 6 months before your course start date. Apply at least 6โ€“8 weeks before you intend to travel to allow time for biometrics and processing.

Complete Documents Checklist

  • Valid passport (at least 6 months beyond course end date)
  • CAS number from your UK university
  • Proof of funds โ€” 28-day bank statements showing required maintenance balance
  • Academic qualifications โ€” degree certificates, transcripts, A-levels or equivalent
  • English language evidence โ€” IELTS certificate, PTE result, or MOI letter
  • ATAS certificate (if required for your course)
  • TB test certificate (required for applicants from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Ghana, Nepal, and others)
  • Parental consent letter (if under 18)
  • Completed online visa application form (UK Visas and Immigration portal)
  • Visa application fee payment: ยฃ558 + IHS surcharge

Common Rejection Reasons โ€” and How to Avoid Them

Understanding why Student Visa applications are refused is essential for a successful first-time application:

  • Insufficient funds: The most common reason. Ensure your balance has been held for 28 consecutive days and never dips below the required amount. A single day below the threshold can result in refusal.
  • Weak ties to home country: UKVI must be satisfied that you intend to leave the UK when your visa expires. Strong ties include employment, property ownership, or strong family ties at home. Students with no clear home country ties are at higher risk.
  • Incomplete documents: Missing transcripts, unsigned bank statements, or untranslated documents are easily avoidable. Use a checklist and have someone review your application before submission.
  • Expired or invalid CAS: A CAS is valid for 6 months. Ensure your visa application is submitted within this window.
  • Inconsistencies in the application: Any mismatch between your visa application form and your supporting documents โ€” dates, names, course details โ€” raises a red flag.
  • Previous visa refusals not declared: Failing to disclose previous UK or other visa refusals is treated as deception and will result in automatic refusal.

Top Tips for a Successful Application

  • Start gathering documents at least 3 months before your intended visa application date
  • Ensure your bank statements are printed on bank letterhead and signed or stamped by your bank
  • Apply for ATAS early if your course requires it
  • Book your biometrics appointment the same day you submit your online application
  • Use a professional counsellor โ€” like Gangal Education โ€” to review your application before submission
