Your Month-by-Month Guide to the September 2026 UK University Intake
Applying to a UK university involves multiple stages, each with its own deadlines. Miss one and the whole timeline shifts. This guide gives you a clear, month-by-month breakdown of exactly what to do and when, working backwards from a September 2026 course start.
Why the Timeline Matters
The UK Student Visa alone takes approximately 15 working days (3 weeks) to process โ and universities typically only issue your CAS number 6โ12 weeks before your course starts. This means that if you leave your application to June or July, you are cutting things dangerously close. Students who miss the visa window must defer to the January 2027 intake.
Stage 1: Document Preparation (Now โ April 2026)
This is the most important stage and the one most students underestimate. Before you can even apply to a university, you need to gather:
- Valid passport (check expiry date โ must be valid well beyond your course end date)
- Academic transcripts and degree certificates (officially translated if not in English)
- English language evidence โ IELTS result, PTE score, or MOI letter from your previous institution
- Personal statement or statement of purpose
- Two academic or professional references
- CV or resume (for postgraduate applications)
- Portfolio (for creative courses)
- TB test certificate (if required for your nationality)
Action now: Order transcripts, arrange reference letters, and confirm whether your institution can provide an MOI letter if you need one. These documents take longer than expected.
Stage 2: University Application (April 2026)
Submit your university application. For postgraduate programmes at most UK universities, you apply directly to the university โ not through UCAS. For undergraduate programmes, UCAS is the standard route, though many international students also apply directly.
- Apply to 2โ5 universities to maximise your chances
- Confirm each university holds a valid UKVI Student Sponsor Licence
- Check whether your course requires ATAS clearance โ if so, apply for ATAS immediately alongside your university application
Timeline: Offers from mid-tier universities typically arrive within 2โ4 weeks of application. Some universities issue conditional offers within days.
Stage 3: Conditional Offer and Deposit (April โ May 2026)
Once you receive a conditional offer, you will be asked to:
- Accept the offer formally through the university's applicant portal
- Pay a deposit to secure your place โ typically ยฃ1,000โยฃ3,000 (sometimes deductible from tuition fees)
- Provide any outstanding documents to convert your conditional offer to an unconditional offer
Key point: Do not pay your deposit to more than one university simultaneously. Once you hold an unconditional offer from your chosen university, you can request your CAS.
Stage 4: Unconditional Offer and CAS Request (May โ June 2026)
Once all your conditions are met (IELTS score submitted, transcripts verified, deposit paid), your offer becomes unconditional. You then formally request your CAS number from the university.
- CAS numbers are typically issued 6โ12 weeks before the course start date
- For September starts, most CAS numbers are issued between June and August
- Some universities issue CAS earlier for students who have completed all documentation promptly
Action: Ensure all your documents are submitted to the university as quickly as possible after your deposit. Any outstanding document delays your CAS โ which delays your visa.
Stage 5: Visa Application (July โ Early August 2026)
Once you have your CAS number, you can submit your UK Student Visa application. The full checklist includes:
- CAS reference number
- 28-day bank statements showing required funds (ยฃ12,006 for London, ยฃ9,207 outside London, plus first-year tuition if not already paid)
- Valid passport
- English language certificate
- ATAS certificate (if required)
- TB test certificate (if required for your country)
After submitting online, book your biometrics appointment at a Visa Application Centre immediately โ slots fill up fast in peak season (JulyโAugust).
Processing time: 15 working days (3 weeks) from biometrics appointment. Apply by mid-August at the latest for a September start.
Stage 6: Visa Decision and Travel Preparation (August 2026)
Once your visa is granted, your passport (or eVisa confirmation) is returned to you. At this point:
- Book your flights โ aim to arrive at least 1 week before your enrolment date
- Arrange accommodation โ student halls, private student accommodation, or private rental
- Open a UK bank account (some banks allow pre-arrival account opening)
- Register with a GP (doctor) near your university as soon as you arrive
Stage 7: Arrival and Enrolment (September 2026)
On arrival in the UK with a Student Visa, you must collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) within 10 days โ it will be waiting at your university or a post office specified in your visa decision. Attend your university's international student induction and complete enrolment.
What If You Miss the September 2026 Intake?
If your documents are not ready or your visa is delayed, do not panic. The majority of UK universities also offer a January 2027 intake. The courses, quality, and visa outcomes are identical. A January start simply means graduating in December 2027 rather than June 2027. Apply with Gangal Education and we will advise on whether September or January is realistic for your situation.
