UK Graduate Visa Cuts to 18 Months in 2027 โ€” Why You Must Apply in 2025/2026

Gangal Education Team 7 May 2026 7 min read

Students starting in September 2025 or January 2026 can still access the full 2-year Graduate Visa. From January 2027, it drops to just 18 months. Act now to secure your post-study work rights.

What Is the UK Graduate Visa?

The UK Graduate Visa โ€” also known as the Post-Study Work (PSW) visa โ€” allows international students to remain in the United Kingdom after completing their degree and work, look for work, or pursue any other activities. It is one of the most compelling reasons international students choose the UK over other English-speaking destinations.

Currently, the Graduate Visa grants 2 years of unrestricted work rights for undergraduate and master's graduates, and 3 years for PhD graduates. You can work in any role, at any salary, for any employer โ€” or launch your own business. No sponsorship required.

The 2027 Change You Must Know About

The UK government has confirmed that students graduating on or after 1 January 2027 will only receive an 18-month Graduate Visa โ€” a reduction of 6 months from the current 2-year entitlement. The 3-year PhD route remains unchanged.

This may sound like a minor adjustment, but for career-building purposes the difference is significant. Six months is the difference between completing a full graduate training scheme, earning the right to switch to a Skilled Worker visa, or having enough time to secure employer sponsorship in a competitive field.

Who Is Affected?

The timing of your graduation โ€” not your start date โ€” determines which Graduate Visa you receive. Here is how the cut-off works in practice:

  • Start September 2025, graduate June/July 2026: Graduates before 1 January 2027 โ€” qualifies for the full 2-year Graduate Visa.
  • Start January 2026, graduate December 2026: Graduates before the cut-off โ€” qualifies for the full 2-year Graduate Visa.
  • Start September 2026, graduate June/July 2027: Graduates after 1 January 2027 โ€” receives only 18 months.
  • Start January 2027 or later: All graduates will receive 18 months only.

If you are planning to start a 3-year undergraduate degree in September 2026, you will graduate in 2029 โ€” well outside the 2-year window. The same applies to most 2-year master's programmes starting in 2026.

Why 6 Months Makes Such a Difference

UK graduate employers operate on a specific hiring cycle. Most major graduate programmes โ€” in banking, consulting, law, engineering, technology, and the public sector โ€” open applications in September and October for roles starting the following September. The full recruitment process, including assessment centres and offers, typically runs from October through March.

With a 2-year Graduate Visa, you have a comfortable margin to complete one full recruitment cycle and settle into your role before needing to arrange employer sponsorship. With 18 months, you are already in month six or seven by the time offers are made โ€” meaning you would need your employer to obtain a Skilled Worker Sponsor Licence and issue a Certificate of Sponsorship almost immediately upon hiring you.

This creates a higher barrier for employers who are not already registered sponsors, which includes a large proportion of SMEs and start-ups โ€” the very companies most likely to offer flexible, innovative graduate roles.

How This Affects Your Career Prospects

The Graduate Visa is not just about staying in the UK โ€” it is about building a career foundation. In the first 2 years after graduation, most international students aim to:

  1. Gain their first professional job in their field of study
  2. Build a UK work history and professional references
  3. Accumulate the salary and experience needed to qualify for a Skilled Worker visa
  4. Potentially apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) down the line

Compressing this timeline into 18 months means you have roughly 12 working months after graduation โ€” accounting for job search, onboarding, and notice periods โ€” to achieve what most people take 18โ€“24 months to accomplish.

Applying Through Gangal Secures the 2-Year Visa

If you apply for your UK university place now โ€” for either September 2025 or January 2026 entry โ€” and complete a standard 1-year master's or 3-year undergraduate programme, you will graduate before the January 2027 cut-off and qualify for the full 2-year Graduate Visa.

At Gangal Education, we guide you through every step of the application process at no cost to you. We work with over 50 UK universities, help you secure conditional and unconditional offers, prepare your CAS documentation, and support your Student Visa application. There are no fees, no hidden charges, and no obligation โ€” we are paid by the universities we work with.

The window to secure your 2-year Graduate Visa is closing. Students who begin their applications in May or June 2026 for a September 2026 start will graduate after the cut-off. The time to act is now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I extend the Graduate Visa? No. The Graduate Visa cannot be extended. Once it expires, you must switch to another visa category such as the Skilled Worker visa, Student visa, or leave the UK.

Does the PhD 3-year Graduate Visa change? No. The reduction from 2 years to 18 months applies only to undergraduate and master's graduates. PhD holders retain the 3-year Graduate Visa.

What if I defer my start date? If you defer from September 2025 to September 2026, you push your graduation beyond the cut-off and lose 6 months of Graduate Visa entitlement. Deferring is inadvisable if post-study work rights are important to you.

Can I start working immediately on the Graduate Visa? Yes. You can apply for the Graduate Visa before your Student Visa expires and begin working (or job searching) the moment it is granted, with no restriction on role, salary, or employer.
