Ghanaian Students Guide to UK Universities 2026 — Requirements & Scholarships

Vasile Gangal 7 May 2026 6 min read read

Ghana has strong historical ties to the UK and a Ghanaian community of over 100,000 in Britain. This guide covers IELTS requirements, affordable universities, TB test requirements, Chevening and GREAT Scholarships, and why Ghanaian students have a strong MOI waiver route.

Why Ghanaian Students Choose the UK in 2026

Ghana and the United Kingdom share deep historical, cultural, and educational ties through the Commonwealth. Ghana's education system — built on a British model — produces graduates well-suited for UK postgraduate study. English is Ghana's official language and the medium of instruction at all levels of its education system, which gives Ghanaian applicants a significant advantage on the MOI waiver route.

The Ghanaian community in the UK numbers over 100,000, with concentrations in London (Peckham, Tottenham, Barnet), Birmingham, Manchester, and Leeds. For Ghanaian students, the UK offers both academic opportunity and community support. In 2026, affordability remains the top concern — this guide addresses both the scholarship landscape and the most cost-effective university options.

IELTS Requirements for Ghanaian Students

English language proficiency requirements for Ghanaian students in 2026:

  • Standard undergraduate and postgraduate entry: IELTS 6.0 overall, with some universities accepting 5.5 for less competitive programmes
  • Russell Group universities (Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh): IELTS 6.5 overall
  • Foundation year programmes: IELTS 5.0–5.5 at most institutions
  • Healthcare and nursing (NMC-regulated): IELTS 7.0 overall, with no band below 7.0

MOI letter route: Because Ghana's entire education system is English-medium, Ghanaian students are among the best-positioned in Africa to use an MOI letter as an IELTS waiver. Graduates of the University of Ghana (Legon), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Cape Coast, Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), and Ashesi University can typically obtain an MOI letter from their registrar confirming English-medium instruction. UK universities accepting MOI letters from Ghanaian applicants include Sunderland, Hertfordshire, Coventry, Teesside, Anglia Ruskin, and Robert Gordon University.

UK Entry Requirements for Ghanaian Qualifications

  • Undergraduate entry: WASSCE (West African Senior School Certificate Examination) with minimum 6 credits including English Language and Mathematics. SSSCE (old system) also accepted by most universities.
  • Postgraduate entry: Ghanaian bachelor's degree with minimum Second Class Lower (2:2 equivalent). Competitive programmes require Second Class Upper (2:1) or GPA 3.0+/4.0.
  • Professional qualifications: ICA Ghana, ICAG, and ACCA qualifications recognised alongside degree credentials for business and accounting programmes.

Financial Evidence Requirements

UKVI requires Ghanaian applicants to demonstrate:

  • London universities: £1,334/month x 9 months = £12,006, plus first-year tuition fees
  • Outside London: £1,023/month x 9 months = £9,207, plus first-year tuition fees

Funds must be held for at least 28 consecutive days before the visa application. Ghanaian bank statements in GHS are accepted with UKVI conversion to GBP. Some applicants use USD or GBP accounts — these are straightforwardly accepted. For competitive universities, an initial tuition deposit as low as £3,500 may be sufficient to trigger your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) issuance, with the remainder due on arrival.

Standard UK Student Visa processing time from Ghana is approximately 3–5 weeks (15–25 working days) from the biometrics appointment at a VFS Global centre in Accra. Priority service (£500 additional) reduces this to approximately 5 working days.

TB Test Requirements

Ghanaian applicants must submit a TB test certificate from a UKVI-approved clinic. Approved TB testing is available in Accra. The test result is valid for 6 months and must be submitted with your visa application. Book early — appointments at approved clinics in Accra fill up during the June–August peak period.

Popular Courses for Ghanaian Students

  1. Law — LLB, LLM, and Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC). University of Law, BPP University, and Northumbria are popular. Ghanaian solicitors and barristers with UK qualifications are highly valued in both countries.
  2. Business and Management — MBA and MSc International Business. Bradford, Salford, Derby, and Coventry are frequent choices for Ghanaian postgraduate students.
  3. Health Sciences — Public Health, Health Management, and Community Nursing. Ghanaian nurses qualified under the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana can apply for NMC registration with IELTS 7.0.
  4. Engineering — Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. KNUST graduates are well-regarded by UK engineering departments at Sheffield, Loughborough, and Birmingham.
  5. Development Studies and Public Administration — SOAS University of London, University of Bradford, and University of Bath offer strong development-focused programmes with excellent career paths in international organisations and the Ghanaian civil service.

Scholarships for Ghanaian Students

Chevening Scholarships (Fully Funded)

Chevening is the most prestigious award available to Ghanaian students. It covers full tuition, monthly living stipend, return flights to the UK, and visa costs for a 1-year master's degree. Eligibility requires at least 2 years of post-degree work experience and strong leadership potential. The 2026–27 application window opens in October 2026 and closes in November 2026. Apply early — there are typically 30–50 Chevening awards for Ghanaian nationals each year.

Commonwealth Scholarships

As a Commonwealth nation, Ghana has access to Commonwealth Shared Scholarships (fully funded, 1-year master's at UK universities), Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships, and Commonwealth PhD Scholarships. Applications for 2026–27 are coordinated through the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat. Closing dates are typically February–March.

GREAT Scholarships Ghana (British Council)

The British Council GREAT Scholarships programme offers minimum £10,000 awards for Ghanaian students on 1-year postgraduate programmes at participating UK universities. Check study-uk.britishcouncil.org/scholarships-funding/great-scholarships/ghana for the current list of participating universities. Applications typically open January–March for September entry.

University of Manchester Global Futures Scholarships

The University of Manchester offers over 300 Global Futures Scholarships for master's students from developing countries, including Ghana. Awards are competitive and typically announced March–April for September entry. Check manchester.ac.uk/study/masters/scholarships for current deadlines.
