Nepalese Students Guide to UK Universities 2026 — IELTS, Visa & Scholarships

Gangal Education Team 7 May 2026 9 min read

Nepal is one of the fastest-growing sources of international students in the UK, drawn by world-class degrees, the 2-year Graduate Visa, and affordable universities outside London. This complete 2026 guide covers IELTS requirements, MOI letter options, scholarships, the visa process from Kathmandu, and living costs.

Why Nepalese Students Choose the UK

Nepal has become one of the most dynamic sources of international students travelling to the United Kingdom. In recent years, the number of Nepalese students granted UK Student Visas has grown significantly, reflecting a shift away from traditional destinations like Australia and a growing awareness of the UK's competitive advantages: shorter degrees, post-study work rights, and a welcoming higher education system.

The UK's Graduate Visa — which grants 2 years of unrestricted work rights after completing an undergraduate or master's degree, and 3 years after a PhD — is one of the most compelling reasons Nepalese graduates choose Britain. No other English-speaking country offers the same combination of degree quality, study duration (3 years undergraduate, 1 year master's), and flexible post-study pathways.

Beyond the Graduate Visa, Nepalese students are drawn to the UK's cultural openness, its established Nepali and South Asian communities in cities like London, Manchester, and Wolverhampton, and the genuine global prestige of a British degree. Whether you are aiming for a career in business, engineering, health sciences, computing, or education, a UK qualification opens doors on every continent.

For students from Nepal, the cost equation also increasingly favours the UK. Tuition fees at mid-ranked but excellent universities start at around £11,500–£14,000 per year, and living costs outside London can be as low as £700–£900 per month. Compare that with Australia's rising costs, Canada's post-study work restrictions, and you will understand why the UK has become the destination of choice for ambitious Nepalese graduates in 2026.

IELTS Requirements for Nepalese Students

English language proficiency is a central requirement for admission to any UK university. The benchmarks for 2026 are:

  • Standard undergraduate entry: IELTS 6.0 overall, with no individual band below 5.5
  • Standard postgraduate (master's) entry: IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall, with no band below 5.5
  • Russell Group universities (Manchester, Edinburgh, Sheffield, UCL): IELTS 6.5–7.0 overall
  • Healthcare, nursing, social work, and teacher training: IELTS 7.0–7.5, regulated by the NMC, GMC, and other professional bodies
  • Foundation year programmes: IELTS 4.5–5.5 at many institutions — an excellent pathway for students not yet at undergraduate entry level
  • Pre-sessional English programmes: If you are 0.5 bands short of the required score, most universities offer 5–10 week pre-sessional courses that allow you to meet the English condition without resitting IELTS

IELTS testing is widely available in Nepal. The British Council and IDP both operate test centres in Kathmandu, with regular test dates. The Academic version is required for degree-level study. PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English) is accepted as an alternative at the majority of UK universities and is available at test centres in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

MOI Letter Options for Nepalese Students

A Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter is an official document from your school or university confirming that your education was conducted in the English language. For eligible Nepalese students, this can serve as an IELTS waiver at a growing number of UK universities — saving both time and the cost of a test (approximately NPR 30,000–35,000 per sitting).

Nepal's higher education system includes many institutions where English is the primary medium of instruction, particularly for science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and business programmes. Students who completed their bachelor's degree or A-level equivalent (Class 11–12) at an English-medium institution in Nepal may be eligible for the MOI route.

To obtain an MOI letter:

  1. Contact your institution's registrar's office — request an official letter confirming English was the medium of instruction for your entire programme
  2. Ensure it is on institutional headed paper — the letter must include the full name and address of the institution
  3. Obtain the registrar's or principal's signature and official stamp — unsigned or unstamped letters are routinely rejected
  4. Request multiple certified copies — different universities may each require an original or certified copy

UK universities that commonly accept MOI letters from Nepalese students include the University of Sunderland, University of Hertfordshire, Coventry University, Anglia Ruskin University, and University of Wolverhampton. Note that the MOI route is not available for healthcare, nursing, or social work courses, which require a formal IELTS score regardless of medium of instruction.

Top UK Universities for Nepalese Students

The following universities are particularly popular with Nepalese students in 2026, offering competitive tuition fees, strong student support, and a welcoming environment for South Asian students:

1. University of Bolton — from £11,500/year

The University of Bolton consistently offers some of the lowest tuition fees in the UK for international students, starting at approximately £11,500 per year for undergraduate programmes. Bolton is located in Greater Manchester, giving students access to the UK's second-largest economy and a large Nepali and South Asian community. Strong programmes in engineering, business, education, and health sciences. Bolton accepts MOI letters from eligible Nepalese applicants and provides generous pastoral support for international students.

Living costs in Bolton: Approximately £700–£850/month — among the most affordable in the UK.

2. University of Sunderland — from £13,450/year

The University of Sunderland in the north-east of England is one of the most accessible and internationally diverse universities in the UK. International undergraduate fees start at approximately £13,450 per year. Sunderland has a long track record of accepting students from Nepal and South Asia, with strong programmes in nursing and health (note: nursing requires IELTS 7.0), business, computing, and media. The city itself offers exceptionally low living costs by UK standards.

Living costs in Sunderland: Approximately £700–£850/month.

3. Coventry University — from £17,200/year

Coventry University is one of the UK's most internationally diverse universities, with over 10,000 international students from more than 150 countries. International undergraduate fees start at approximately £17,200 per year, but Coventry offers generous merit-based scholarships reducing tuition by up to £2,000 for eligible students. Particularly strong in engineering, automotive design, business, and health sciences. Coventry city centre is significantly cheaper than London, with a vibrant and diverse student community.

Living costs in Coventry: Approximately £850–£1,050/month.

4. University of Wolverhampton — from £13,950/year

The University of Wolverhampton has long been a popular choice for Nepalese students, partly because Wolverhampton has one of the UK's largest Nepali communities outside London. International undergraduate fees start at approximately £13,950 per year. Strong programmes in business, law, computing, engineering, and nursing. The university has a dedicated international student support team and a well-established Nepali Society. Access to Birmingham — a major economic hub — is just 15 minutes by train.

Living costs in Wolverhampton: Approximately £750–£900/month.

5. Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) — from £14,500/year

Anglia Ruskin University has campuses in Cambridge, Chelmsford, and Peterborough. International undergraduate fees start at approximately £14,500 per year. ARU's Cambridge campus is particularly attractive — students benefit from the global prestige of the Cambridge name while paying a fraction of Cambridge University's fees. Strong programmes in health sciences, business, education, and social sciences. ARU accepts MOI letters for eligible Nepalese students on appropriate courses.

Living costs in Chelmsford/Peterborough: Approximately £850–£1,000/month.

6. University of Sunderland (London Campus) — from £14,000/year

For students who want a London address on their degree certificate without London living costs, the University of Sunderland's London campus offers international undergraduate and postgraduate programmes starting at approximately £14,000 per year. Located in the heart of London, this campus provides access to London's enormous job market and professional network while maintaining Sunderland's accessible admissions standards.

Living costs in London: Approximately £1,300–£1,600/month (the main trade-off of a London campus).

7. University of Hertfordshire — from £14,450/year

The University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield (just 20 minutes by train from central London) offers international undergraduate fees from approximately £14,450 per year. Strong in aerospace, engineering, pharmacy, business, and computing. Hertfordshire accepts MOI letters for a range of programmes and has a dedicated South Asian student community. The university's location gives students access to London's job market without London accommodation costs.

Living costs in Hatfield: Approximately £900–£1,100/month.

Scholarships Available for Nepalese Students

Chevening Scholarships (Fully Funded)

The Chevening Scholarship is the UK government's flagship international scholarship, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). It covers full tuition fees, monthly living stipend, return flights, and visa fees for a 1-year master's degree at any UK university.

  • Eligibility: Nepalese citizens with at least 2 years of post-graduation work experience; demonstrated leadership potential
  • Value: Full funding — tuition, living allowance, flights, and visa
  • Application window: Opens August each year; deadline typically November (2026–27 cycle opens August 2026)
  • Competition: Competitive, but Nepal historically receives a good allocation of Chevening awards

Commonwealth Scholarships

Nepal is a Commonwealth member nation, making Nepalese students eligible for Commonwealth Shared Scholarships and Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships. Full funding covers tuition, living costs, and travel. Applications are submitted through the Nepal Education Ministry and the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. Primarily targeted at students from lower-income backgrounds pursuing master's or PhD programmes at UK universities.

British Council GREAT Scholarships

The GREAT Scholarships programme, run in partnership with the British Council and participating UK universities, offers awards of at least £10,000 for Nepalese students pursuing a 1-year postgraduate programme. Participating universities for the 2026–27 cycle include institutions across England, Scotland, and Wales. Applications go directly to the participating university — not through a central portal. Deadlines typically fall between February and April for September entry.

University-Specific Scholarships

Many UK universities offer dedicated international merit scholarships that Nepalese students can access:

  • Coventry University International Scholarship: Up to £2,000 off tuition fees for eligible high-achieving students

  • University of Sunderland International Scholarship: £1,500–£2,000 reduction for early applicants with strong academic records

UK Student Visa Process for Nepalese Nationals

Applying for a UK Student Visa from Nepal follows the standard UKVI process, with some specific requirements for Nepalese applicants:

Step 1: Receive Your CAS Number

Before you can apply for a Student Visa, your UK university must issue you a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference number. This is generated once you have accepted an unconditional offer and paid any required deposit. The CAS contains details of your course, tuition fees, and English language evidence — all of which are verified by UKVI.

Step 2: Complete the Online Visa Application

Apply online at the UK Visas and Immigration website. You will need to provide your CAS number, passport details, financial evidence, English language evidence, and academic qualifications. The visa application fee for a Student Visa is currently £558 (raised from £490 on 8 April 2026), plus the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which is currently £776 per year of your course.

Step 3: Biometrics Appointment at Kathmandu VFS

Nepalese applicants attend a biometrics appointment at the VFS Global Visa Application Centre in Kathmandu. The centre is located at Hathigauda, Naxal, Kathmandu. You will submit your fingerprints and a digital photograph at this appointment. You should also submit your supporting documents (passport, financial evidence, CAS details, English language evidence, and TB certificate) at this stage.

Appointment availability varies — book as early as possible once your CAS is issued, as popular appointment slots fill up several weeks in advance, particularly in the June–August peak period before September entry.

Step 4: TB Test Certificate

Nepal is on the UK government's list of countries requiring a tuberculosis (TB) test for visa applicants. You must obtain a TB test certificate from an approved UKVI clinic in Nepal before submitting your visa application. Approved clinics are located in Kathmandu. Results are typically available within 3–5 working days and are valid for 6 months from the date of the test.

Step 5: Financial Evidence

You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees and living costs. The UKVI minimum maintenance figures for 2026 are:

  • Universities in London: £1,334 per month for up to 9 months = £12,006, plus first-year tuition fees
  • Universities outside London: £1,023 per month for up to 9 months = £9,207, plus first-year tuition fees

Funds must have been held in your account (or a parent/sponsor's account) for at least 28 consecutive days before the date of your visa application. Nepali bank statements from banks such as Nepal Investment Mega Bank, Nabil Bank, or Standard Chartered Nepal are accepted. The balance will be assessed at the prevailing GBP exchange rate.

Step 6: Visa Decision and Collection

Standard Student Visa processing from Nepal typically takes approximately 3 weeks (15 working days) from your biometrics appointment. A Priority Service is available for an additional fee, typically reducing processing time to 5 working days. Your visa vignette (sticker) is placed in your passport and collected from the VFS centre, or returned by courier if you opted for passport return.

Living Costs in the UK for Nepalese Students

Managing your living costs effectively is one of the most important aspects of studying in the UK. Choosing a university outside London is the single biggest lever you have to reduce your total study budget. Here is a breakdown of estimated monthly living costs at popular university cities for Nepalese students:

City / UniversityEstimated Monthly CostUKVI Maintenance Minimum
London (Sunderland London Campus)£1,300–£1,600£1,334
Hatfield (Hertfordshire)£900–£1,100£1,023
Cambridge / Chelmsford (ARU)£900–£1,100£1,023
Coventry£850–£1,050£1,023
Wolverhampton£750–£900£1,023
Sunderland£700–£850£1,023
Bolton£700–£850£1,023

Typical Monthly Breakdown (Outside London)

  • Accommodation (student halls or shared house): £350–£600/month
  • Food and groceries: £150–£200/month
  • Transport (bus pass or occasional train): £50–£80/month
  • Phone, internet, and utilities (if not included): £30–£60/month
  • Personal expenses, clothing, entertainment: £100–£150/month
  • Total: approximately £680–£1,090/month

Part-Time Work

Your UK Student Visa permits you to work up to 20 hours per week during term time, and full-time during official university holidays. The UK National Living Wage is currently £11.44/hour (2024–25 rate; expected to rise for 2026). Working 15 hours per week during term time can generate approximately £600–£700/month, meaningfully offsetting your living costs without compromising your studies.

Total Annual Budget: A Realistic Estimate

To help you plan your finances, here is a realistic total annual cost estimate for a Nepalese student studying at a mid-range university outside London in 2026:

  • Tuition fees: £13,500/year
  • Living costs (12 months): £10,000/year (approx £833/month)
  • Visa and IHS fees (3-year degree, Year 1): £2,886 (£558 visa + £2,328 IHS for 3 years)
  • Flights and setup costs: £1,000–£1,500
  • Estimated total first year: approximately £27,000–£29,000
  • Converted at current rates: approximately NPR 47–51 lakh

September vs January Intake

UK universities offer two main entry points each year. Both are equally valid for Nepalese students:

  • September 2026 entry: The main intake — the widest choice of courses, scholarship opportunities, and university places. Applications should be submitted by June 2026 at the latest for most universities (UCAS clearing runs until September for undergraduate courses).
  • January 2027 entry: A strong secondary intake offered by the majority of UK universities. Fewer scholarship options but an excellent route for students who missed the September cycle or need more time to finalise their IELTS scores and documentation.

Gangal Education can guide you through both intake cycles and will advise on the best timeline based on your current qualifications, IELTS status, and visa processing timeline.
